June 22, 2009 - New Image Wins 3rd Rice Lake Invitational Title

New Image Salon of Montfort, Wisconsin, event champions in 2007 and co-titlists in 2006, rebounded from a lackluster 2008 showing to post a perfect 4-0 mark and walk away with the championship of the 31st Aquafest Invitational Fastpitch Tournament held June19-21, 2009 in Rice Lake, WI. The Minnesota Angels of Norwood Young America, who downed the Lightning of Marshall, Michigan in the loser's bracket final, finished as runner-up.

New Image opened tournament play with an 8-1 win over Stadium Lanes of Duluth. The Montfort club then edged Marshall Lightning 2-1 before posting an impressive 11-4 victory over the Angels in the winner's bracket final. The score of the championship contest was New Image 6, Minnesota Angels 4.

The Angels embarked on their road to the title game with a 10-3 triumph over the La Crosse Athletics, then disposed of defending champion and six time tournament winner Wilber Lime 9-4 and 2006 co-champion Jordan Realty of West Saint Paul 4-2.

After the winner's bracket final loss to New Image the Minnesota squad bounced back to sneak by Marshall 2-1 to set up their championship game appearance.

Marshall Lightning made their tournament debut a successful one with an 8-1 win over Bar of Appleton Athletics. The Michigan club then slipped by 2008 runner-up ASB-Villard of Minnesota 7-6 in nine innings, lost a 2-1 thriller to New Image and beat Appleton again, this time 2-1, and Jordan Realty 8-4 before being eliminated by the Angels.

Two local teams were in the 2009 field. The Rice Lake Orangemen opened the tournament by outlasting Sawdust City of Eau Claire, 9-8. after blowing a seven run first inning lead highlighted by Sam Suess' grand slam home run. The Orangemen then fell to eventual 4th place finisher Jordan Realty 6-1, downed A&A Tire Service of Brill 7-0, then were eliminated by Stadium Lanes 3-1.

A&A Tire Service, a first year team and its inaugural Aquafest tourney, fell to Stadium Lanes 11-4, the Orangemen 7-0, and Bar of Appleton Athletics 11-3.

The 2009 All-Tournament Team included infielders Jim Milkowski, The Bar of Appleton Athletics; Chris Diethert, Minnesota Angels; Scott Herda, Jordan Realty; B.J. Gullick Marshall Lightning; and Nick Shailes, Minnesota Angels; outfielders Tony Schaaf, The Bar of Appleton Athletics; Kevin Bohn, ASB-Villard; Bill Kunkel, Marshall Lightning; and Tucker Diedrich, Rice Lake Orangemen; catchers Tom Schoeberl, ASB-Villard and Jeff Jahn, New Image; and pitchers Sean Kelly, Marshall Lightning; Dave Myer, Duluth Stadium Lanes; and Kevin Kammueller, Jordan Realty. Pitcher-designated hitter Jeramie Holman of New Image was the tournament Most Valuable Player.
